Wake Up To Ocean Waves at Thornhill Broome Campground

This was a campground we discovered during the Covid pandemic, and it was perfect for a private and romantic social distancing getaway.

Location and Logistics

Thornhill Broome campground is one of two campgrounds at Point Mugu State Park. In our opinion, it’s the better campground, as all of the sites are located on the beach and have an amazing view of the ocean. Book here!

We visited in January and with a sweater, a jacket and a campfire were completely fine from a temperature standpoint. Pro tip – buy a non insulated metal water bottle, boil some water in it, wait til it cools a little and put it in a sock. There you have a perfect hot water bottle that will last you all night!

Things To Do

You have a front row seat to the ocean, so make the most of it! How often do you get your own personal stretch of sand in Southern California, especially right outside of Malibu? This campground allows grilling and campfires.

There are lots of hikes nearby, we really liked the Mugu Peak Trail which is about 6.5 miles but has gorgeous views over the ocean. If that seems a little much for you, there are also the Scenic and Overlook Trails which have less incline but also very beautiful views.

Malibu is a 20 minute drive from this campground. Point Dume is one of our favorite places to watch the sun set in Malibu. Hike up halfway to the point and set up a little picnic, like we did!

Special Considerations

This campground fills up QUICKLY so be sure to book way ahead of time. There’s not much nearby – we ended up having to drive 15 minutes into Oxnard to get more firewood as it was January in coastal California so was a little chilly.
