Restaurant Review: Kaviar

Los Angeles is synonymous with high end sushi. Think Nobu, Sugarfish…but our new favorite go-to is Kaviar. They’re making sushi an experience, and we are here for it.

The Location

As far as we know, there are two locations as of the date of writing this post. One in Old Town Pasadena, the other in Downtown Los Angeles. We’ve only been to the Pasadena location. Parking is available in a lot around the corner (or street parking) and there are a set of stairs you walk up to get to the restaurant. The place is dimly lit and moody, with a display case showcasing armor on one end and a tree at the other. The two sides of the restaurant are separated by the bar.

The Food

We were told the fish comes fresh on Friday, and we were not disappointed. We selected a variety of cold appetizers but passed on the hot appetizers as we just weren’t in the mood.

The sushi and sashimi were incredibly fresh and delicious and we thought there was a large selection compared to other sushi restaurants in the area. As far as the signature rolls, the stand out for us was the Truffle Toro roll which comes out smoking with ?liquid nitrogen? and topped with 24K gold and caviar! It’s the second priciest item on the menu and though it was extremely delicious it was quite small so we probably won’t order again – though definitely recommend considering it if its your first time! We filled up on the Maki rolls which were simply crafted with flavorful fresh ingredients.

The Drinks

The servers are great about keeping the ice water coming, but if that isn’t enough for you we’d definitely recommend one of the cocktails. They are individual and artfully created, and you really can’t go wrong. We wouldn’t really recommend getting wine here – the wine list is a bit short and they were out of most things during our first visit. But with a cocktail menu this delicious, who needs wine!

Our favorite drink was the Emerald City – the rosemary is torched at your table and the delicious smoke is infused into your drink as you watch! The Rising Sun was also very delicious, and the menu left us wanting to try other items next visit.

Bottom Line

10/10 would go again (we have been several times since we discovered this place a few months ago!). It is pricey, but for the quality of the ingredients and the vampy atmosphere it is worth it for a sultry date night out. Be sure to make a reservation in advance (credit card required) as this restaurant does fill up on weekends.
