What is an IDP and why do I need one?

An IDP is going to be one of the most important documents you bring with you on your trip, if you plan on renting a car at your destination. Read on to find exactly what this stands for and why you need one.

We LOVE renting cars and driving around new places. We feel that it’s often the best way to get a local’s perspective of a new city or country. We’ve rented cars in Mexico, Belize, Santorini…the list goes on and on. But we would recommend it 10/10 every time.

What is an IDP?

An IDP stands for “International Drivers Permit”, or International Drivers License. It is an identification card that is recognized by over 150 countries in the world. You may be expecting a small card-shaped piece of plastic with your name, address, etc. on it. In reality, an IDP is more like a small paper booklet that has a passport photo of you.

Why do I need one?

Some countries will fine you for driving without a valid IDP, as a US drivers license may or may not count in that country! Some countries may even require it for the car rental process. Since the IDP only costs $20, it is a worthy investment to avoid costly fees later.

How do I get an IDP?

IDPs are SUPER easy to obtain, if you have a valid US drivers license. For us, the process was very simple. You can either apply in person at a AAA branch office or apply via mail with an application, 2 passport photos, a copy of your drivers license, and $20. Check out the webpage here. We received our IDP within two weeks of applying and were well on our way shortly after.
