Is Global Entry right for you?

There are so many options when it comes to expedited travel programs. We’re already big fans of the TSA Pre-Check program. Read on to see if global entry is right for you.

Global Entry is another one of the Customs and Border Protection programs, just like TSA Pre-Check. If you are approved for this program, you will be considered part of the “Trusted Traveler Program”.

Who is a good candidate for Global Entry?

We find that Global Entry is likely to be helpful for those meet a few criteria. Firstly, those who travel outside of the country more than twice a year. We think that those considering this program should make sure they live near an airport where this program is active. For example, we live near LAX and definitely travel out of the country more than twice a year. So we find it to be well worth it. The link to the full list of airports that are participating in the Global Entry program can be found here.

What are the benefits?

Global Entry allows expedited entry into various participating countries and back into the United States through automated kiosk machines. This means less standing around in long immigration lines. Especially at a time when you are probably going to be jet lagged and tired from a long flight!

As part of the Global Entry program, you are also entitled to TSA Pre-Check benefits! This means reduced wait times at airports before departing for your flight.

How do you apply for Global Entry?

Applying for the Global Entry program is a little more in depth than the TSA Pre-Check program. However is still relatively simple.

You have to make a TTP (Trusted Travelers Program) account online and pay $100. TSA Pre-Check is already $85 so it’s really just an additional $15. Your application will then be reviewed and if you’re eligible, you will then we allowed to schedule an interview. I was able to do my interview after traveling for 25 hours from Sri Lanka to LAX. But I still found the interview quick, easy and pleasant. You have to bring your passport and another ID to the interview.

And that was it! The TSA agent informed me I had been approved for the program with my passport being activated immediately. I received my card in the mail a few weeks later. It couldn’t be more simple. More info on how to apply here.
