20 Rad Things to do in Tokyo

Tokyo is a 24/7 sprawling urban jungle, and there are endless fun and unique activities available. Here’s a starter list of 20 quirky and engaging things to do if in Tokyo you need food for thought!

1. TeamLab Planets

This is one of the coolest experiences in Tokyo – it’s a large, sensory interactive art exhibit (emphasis on interactive!). FYI it does involve walking through some water barefoot, but don’t worry – there are lockers for all of your belongings. Try to book your visit in advance as you’ll be given a specific entrance time! TeamLab Planets is easy enough to access via the Yurikamome Line.

2. Tokyo DisneySea

This one is for the Disney fans – you’ll get to experience new rides like Journey to the Center of the Earth, and old classics like the Tower of Terror! There are also a variety of delicacies not available at other Disney resorts – we had some delicious chai churros. Hop on the JR Keiyo/Musashino Line for a quick trip from Tokyo.

3. Harajuku – people watching and stuffed crepes

Harajuku is a super trendy neighborhood in Tokyo, ideal for people watching (you’ll be sure to see some unique and eclectic outfits). Don’t forget to snack on a stuffed crepe – super popular in this area – and window shop the vintage stores.

4. Sensoji Temple

This stunning ancient 5 story Buddhist temple near Asakusa station is worth a visit. It’ll transport you back to the Tokyo of old with its aromatic incense and Buddhist chants.

5. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

This is perfect for a quick break from the city, if you need a little respite from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Lush greenery and mirror-like ponds will surround you as you relax into peaceful nature.

6. Attend a Sumo Show

If you have the time (and money) to spare, definitely consider catching a traditional Sumo wrestling show. These thrilling matches are best enjoyed at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Arena (tickets can be found here).

7. Stroll Down Memory Lane

No, like, literally. This is an alley in Shinjuku that is known for its keeping with ancient times – you’ll find a delectable collection of street foods like yakitori and steaming bowls of ramen. Bring your camera!

8. Enjoy a traditional kaseiki meal

This is a must-do when visiting Japan. Enjoying a multi course traditional meal from a Japanese chef is a life-changing experience and can be done at a variety of restaurants around the city. Here’s a list of the top Kaseiki restaurants in Tokyo at the moment.

9. Golden Gai

No first-time trip to Tokyo is complete without bar hopping in the Golden Gai district of Tokyo. It can be considered quite touristy, but worth making a visit to see the collection of bars scattered along the narrow alleys.

10. Shibuya Sky

The Shibuya scramble (the world’s largest crosswalk crossing) is definitely a must-see sight in Tokyo, and what better place to watch than from a bird’s eye view at Shibuya Sky. You can relax away from the hustle and bustle and take in the scramble, which can involve up to 2,500 people per crossing!

11. Owl Cafe

Or hedgehog, capybara, pig, shiba inu, or cat cafe…Tokyo’s initiation of numerous types of animal cafes has quickly become popularized and is a must-do on many tourists itineraries to the city.

12. Godzilla Head Statue

Check out this piece of handiwork located in Shinjuku and you’ll feel transported into the movie itself.

13. Omakase at Tokyo Ten

This is a bit of a splurge meal, but we highly rate the omakase sushi dinner at Tokyo Ten. You’re in for a super authentic cultural culinary journey that’ll have you swimming through fresh fish.

14. Late Night Jams at the Ruby Room

Located in Shibuya, this cool bar hosts tons of live music and can be the perfect ending spot for a night out – check the schedule here. Access it by exiting the famed Shibuya station at the Hachiko exit.

15. Dawn Avatar Robot Cafe

If futuristic is your flavor, head on over to this robot-operated cafe for some new age dining. The robot servers are operated by people who are differently abled and work from home.

16. Tokyo Leisure Land

This is an awesome arcade located on Odaiba Island (pairs well with TeamLab Planets). Here you’ll find classic arcade games, VR experiences, escape room style scenarios, thrilling rides and much more!

17. Bar Benfiddich

Located in Shinjuku, this bar tops any list of best watering holes in Tokyo for its classic and experimental cocktail offerings in an intimate environment. Since there are only 15 seats, we recommend making a reservation in advance!

18. Gotokuji Temple

This Buddhist temple can be a bit of a hike (depending on where you’re staying in Tokyo) but the thousands of waving cats (or manekiniko) will make it worth your journey! The peaceful grounds offer a lovely city break.

19. National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

We had a lovely afternoon beating the heat wandering around this museum, located on Odaiba Island. Aside from the highly education exhibits and planetarium, this museum also offers a cafe with stunning views over Rainbow Bridge!

20. Finally…cosplay Mario Kart!

This is one of those “only in Tokyo” things – you can get into character and drive around the streets of Tokyo in a go-kart! There are a couple of locations this is offered. We witnessed it in Odaiba Island however it’s available in Akhiabara too (electric town)! This is truly a unique experience and worth a go, but keep in mind an International Drivers Permit is required.
